Undocked Tails

The AMSC Board recently resolved to clarify its position on undocked tails on dogs being shown at AKC events and voted to send the following statement to all AKC-approved judges of Miniature Schnauzers. The wording of the statement has been approved by the AKC Judging Department.

The Board of Governors of the American Miniature Schnauzer Club on October 3, 2003, voted to remind all those judging Miniature Schnauzers in AKC conformation that the current Standard for the Miniature Schnauzer calls for a docked tail. The complete text from the Standard regarding the tail reads: “Tail set high and carried erect. It is docked only long enough to be clearly visible over the backline of the body when the dog is in proper length of coat.”

“A dog shown in conformation with a natural tail should be penalized because an undocked tail is a deviation from the Standard.”
